Nazuna Gosho is a luxury Ryokan-type hotel with seven rooms tucked inside the heart of Kyoto. Each room designed around a specific Wagashi (traditional Japanese sweet).
Before its transformation into a ryokan, the property consisted of two abandoned “Kyomachiya”—traditional Japanese townhouses from Kyoto—connected through their backyards to create the current space. The rare opportunity was given to explore both properties in their untouched state before beginning the design process. During this exploration, we came across a collection of old furniture, piled away in corners, each piece a testament to the value it once held for its former owners.
For this project, fixed furniture that served the Ryokan’s needs was designed to quietly blend among the sober interiors of the existing architecture.
To highlight the Wagashi concept, each room has textiles designed by Oyyo Design Studio, as well as work and furniture by artists such as Simon Klenell, Ammy Olofsson, Artek, Le Morandine and Drill Design.
